The reddish-brown heartwood is clearly differentiated from the pale straw-colored sapwood. The heartwood matures to a medium golden reddish color with exposure to air, but this can be hindered by applying UV protected lacquer. The grain is irregular and interlocked, giving the wood a course though even texture. Afzelia "Rustikal" is a wood type which does NOT have knots, but rather a strong grain and color, giving it a distinctive character. Afzelia "Extra" is a specially selected wood which is much more uniform, and generally lighter, giving the area a much more "relaxing" feeling.
Typical dry weight: 820kg/m3
Specific gravity: 0.82
Properties
Afzelia has only moderate bending classification, but is otherwise considered one of the hardest and most resilient woods. It has high crushing and bending strength, low resistance to shock loads and medium stiffness. It polishes well when the grain is filled, but is difficult to stain when using normal oils. We recommend using special "exotic wood" oils or stains. Pre-boring is advised for nailing and screwing.
Durability: The heartwood is extremely durable and stable, with great resistance to preservative treatment and impregnation
Grows: Tropical West and East Africa
Typical Height: 25-30m
Trunk Diameter: 1.2m
