Also called:
frêne, gemeine EscheDescription
Ash varies in color from dark brown, gray, and creamy tan tinged with red. European ash can sometimes resemble olive wood with dark almost black streaks, and is tough, heavy, straight-grained and coarse, but even in texture. American ash is also straight grained and course with an even texture, but is marginally less strong, though more lustrous. Ash over time becomes slightly tinged with a yellowish tint over time and with exposure to air.
Typical dry weight: 710kg/m3
Specific gravity: 0.71
Properties
The wood is tough, elastic, and strong relative to its weight and shock resistance is very good. The harder species need pre-boring for nailing and screwing. It polishes, stains, and glues well.
Durability: American ash is perishable and non-durable, with permeable sapwood. If left in the raw form and exposed, it is vulnerable to attack from the common furniture and powder-post beetle. It takes preservative treatment well.
Grows: Europe, North Africa, Western Asia, Canada and USA
Typical height: 25-36m
Trunk diameter: 0.6-1.5m
